Safety Planning

The decision to leave an abusive relationship is a courageous and critical step toward healing and safety. It's natural to feel overwhelmed when planning for this life-changing transition, especially when considering how to develop a safety plan and secure shelter for yourself and your children (if applicable). The key is to focus on safety first and seek assistance from those who can help.

Frequent Concerns :

- What should I bring with me?

- How can I ensure my children's safety?

- How can I make this transition easier for my children?


We've put together a list of essential items that may be helpful when fleeing domestic violence. Remember, in dangerous situations, your safety and that of your children is the most important priority. If you're unable to gather these items safely, the Marjaree Mason Center will assist you in collecting them later. Never put yourself or your children at risk to retrieve items in an unsafe environment. If you ever feel you are in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.

Suggested Items to Bring:

1. Identification and Personal Documents:

- Driver’s license

- Birth certificates (for you and your children)

- Social security cards

2. Financial Information:

- Bank accounts and credit cards

- Emergency cash

3. Clothing and Essential Supplies:

- Clothes for you and your children

- Prescription medications

- Hygiene items

4. Children’s Needs:

- Favorite toys, blankets, or comfort items

- School supplies

- Snacks

5. Legal and Important Documents:

- Protective orders or legal papers (e.g., divorce or custody papers, passport, work permit)

- Emergency contact numbers (family, friends, doctors, hospitals)

6. Safety and Convenience Items:

- Extra house and car keys

- Pay-as-you-go cell phone

- Emergency money

7. Memories and Sentimental Items:

- Photo albums or cherished belongings
