Going to Court? Here's What to Expect...
When attending a court hearing in Fresno County there are a few things to remember and/or expect.
First and foremost, if you are a Marjaree Mason Center client and have to go to court, we are available to accompany you. Facing your abuser can be intimidating and scary, but you never have to do it alone. In the state of California you are allowed an advocate to accompany you to a Domestic Violence Restraining Order Hearing. The Marjaree Mason Center advises a professional advocate from the Marjaree Mason Center accompany you, someone who understands the process and can help you through it free of cost, but who attends with you is up to your discretion. The point is – you are not alone.
Some other items to remember/know when attending court:
- Childcare is available in the Fresno County Children’s Waiting Rooms. Check the link below for specific instructions
- A bailiff will be present in court, he or she is there for your personal protection, not to arrest you
- Be on time, this means be at least 30 minutes early
- Dress appropriately, here are some suggestions
- Court Attire Suggestions
- No sunglasses, shorts, or hats
- The case could be continued. This means you could show up to court and not be seen, having to return another day
- There will be several other cases heard at the same time as yours, so the court will be filled with other people
- Your abuser has the right to be there
- The state of California requires employers to give you time off for domestic violence related tasks – including court. Speak to your HR representative at your place of employment about compensation for this time off.
