Victim Advocate - Fresno Police Department

Type:                            Regular, Full-Time,

Hours:                          Wednesday – Sunday; 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm            

Status:                          Non-Exempt

Manager Title:            Director Legal Services

SUMMARY: Serve as an advocate for victims of domestic violence and promote the elimination of family violence within Fresno County. Provide education and direct outreach to victims of domestic violence. This position will work in collaboration with the Fresno Police Department, in responding to a secured scene, to meet with victims of a domestic violence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide crisis intervention and follow up services to victims of domestic violence.
  • Work as a team and support the mission and goals of MMC.
  • Respond in person, to a law enforcement secured scene, to meet with a victim after an incident of domestic violence
  • Provide information on the judicial process and legal advocacy
  • Occasionally assists in facilitating Legal Options Class which educates clients about various types of restraining order.
  • Occasionally provides court accompaniment to clients.
  • Provide informational presentations on domestic violence as scheduled, to outside groups.
  • Provide outreach to facilitate the linkage of services for victims of domestic violence.
  • Develop and maintain good networking relationships with community referral agencies.
  • Communicates effectively with clients and staff.
  • Safeguard clients’ security and confidentiality.
  • Daily preparation/maintenance of client records and files.
  • Provide complete, accurate and timely information needed for grant reporting and management.
  • Safeguard assets of MMC, including merchandise and other assets
  • Regular attendance and promptness are considered part of each employee’s essential job functions.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Social Work or related field. 
  • Crisis intervention experience required. 
  • Experience working with law enforcement preferred.
  • Experience in public speaking and networking.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and the general public.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and proof of liability insurance on personal auto.Must be insurable at all times at standard rate by MMC insurance carrier.

  • Must successfully pass a drug, background and Tuberculosis test.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Self-starter, ability to work with minimal supervision and to work effectively in team.
  • Excellent communication, community relations, networking and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to understand the needs of families and women and children and a willingness to address their concerns with action designed to create change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with sensitivity and without discrimination towards peoples of diverse cultures, races/ethnicity’s, socio-economic positions, ages, religions, genders, physical/mental challenges/disabilities and sexual orientations.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
