Maintenance/Custodial Assistant

Type:                 Full-time Temporary

Status:                         Non-Exempt

Schedule:                    Monday – Friday, occasional evening or weekend on-call duty

Manager Title:            Director of Facilities



SUMMARY:  Assists with maintenance & custodial duties of MMC facilities, vehicles, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Inspects facilities and equipment to determine needs and extent of service, equipment required and maintenance or repair needed;

  • Performs all project maintenance at all of MMC’s six facilities;

  • Maintains records of planned and completed maintenance;

  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet schedules; reviews work orders to determine work priorities; Assists with repairs and maintenance;

  • Monitors safety and security of buildings;

  • Operates within department budget;

  • Works as a team member and support the mission and goals of the agency and programs;

  • Safeguards assets of the MMC, including merchandise and other assets.

  • Safeguards clients’ security and confidentiality;

  • Cleans rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, stairways, and other work areas;

  • Vacuums rugs and carpets;

  • Dusts furniture and equipment;

  • Assists maintenance tech and custodian as needed to complete daily tasks and work orders


  • Must be able to respond evenings and weekeds as assigned for on call duty


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience performing routine building maintenance and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

  • Experience with operation of small tools

  • Knowledge of relevant equipment and effective safety practices and procedures for the protection of clients, employee, and agency property.


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally or in email correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively to contractors & vendors.


Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.


  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and proof of liability insurance on personal auto.Must be insurable at all times at standard rate set by MMC insurance carrier.

  • Must pass tuberculosis test, drug test and fingerprinting test.


  • General understanding of basic electrical, plumbing, maintenance & repair;

  • Must have demonstrated a commitment to the mission of the MMC;

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.

  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Regular attendance and promptness are considered part of each employee’s essential job functions.

  • The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.

  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
